| Born in Connecticut to Nevisian parents, Constance Baker Motley was involved in civil rights early. Her mother founded the New Haven NAACP and after graduating Columbia Law School, she became the first female attorney at the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund. In the 1950s she argued before the Supreme Court ten times, the first Black woman to do so, and won nine of those cases, including landmark decisions on segregation. In the 1960s she became the first Black woman elected to the New York State Senate, elected Manhattan Borough President, and appointed to a federal court. |
